Travis Scott Cleared of Criminal Charges in Astroworld Tragedy

American rapper Travis Scott learned Thursday that he will not be prosecuted for the crowd movement that left ten people dead during the Astroworld festival he co-organized in Houston, Texas, in November 2021.

He said he was “absolutely devastated” after the death of ten people who participated in the American music festival Astroworld on November 5, 2021, which he co-organized in Texas. Rapper Travis Scott learned Thursday, June 29 that “no criminal charges will be brought” against him.

“It is tragic that ten innocent people were killed while trying to enjoy an evening of music and entertainment. (…) But a tragedy is not always a crime and a death is not always a homicide”, explained the prosecutor of the county of Harris.

The star accused of not having ensured the safety of festival-goers

Some 50,000 spectators had gathered in NRG Park, in Houston, to attend the concert of Travis Scott, when a stampede had trapped dozens of people. Lacking air and space, some had fainted and been trampled on by the crowd. Faced with calls for help, the organizers had waited several tens of minutes before stopping the music and evacuating the premises. A 9-year-old child died in the stampede, which also left hundreds injured.

Numerous complaints had been lodged against the organizers of the Astroworld festival, accused of not having ensured the safety of the participants. They were aimed in particular at the rapper, present on stage at the time of the tragedy, the promoters, the managers of the concert site and several companies associated with the event.

While the decision rendered on Thursday June 29 concerns only criminal proceedings, civil proceedings are therefore still possible.
