Traveling to the United States: it’s possible again, PCR test, vaccines, what documents do I need to present?

The United States reopens its borders from this Monday, November 8. Travelers must present several documents at the airport to enter the United States. We take stock.

After 18 months of closure, the United States reopens its borders on Monday, November 8. Airlines are already in battle order, ready to welcome again vaccinated travelers from 33 countries. Air France, British Airways and United Airlines have added flights, reinforced their staff and chosen larger planes to once again focus on transatlantic routes, which are highly strategic for companies.

The separated families will finally be able to reunite, as will the tourists, who will now be able to embark a few days before Thanksgiving and the Christmas period. But beware, several conditions must be respected to enter American soil.

Complete vaccination

All travelers will be asked to carry a complete vaccination schedule (two doses) with them. The Centers for Disease control, the American health authority, considers the vaccination course completed 14 days after vaccine administration. Those under 18 are not affected, as are diplomats and travelers on urgent humanitarian missions.

Some refused vaccines

This vaccination schedule must meet the authorizations of the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The following vaccines are therefore accepted: Janssen, the PfizerBioNTech, the Modern, l’AstraZeneca, the Indian Covaxin, the Covishield (manufactured by AstraZeneca in Inde at a lower cost) and finally the Chinese Sinopharm and Sinovac.

There is therefore no question of letting a vaccinated person enter the Sputnik V (Russia), or to CanSino, another Chinese vaccine for example.

QR code certificate only

Only certificates in the form of QR code will be accepted! Whether on mobile or in print. “The printing or the digital photo of the booklet or certificate of vaccination will not be accepted”, specifies The Parisian.

“This proof of vaccination must be a paper or digital document issued by an official source and must include the name and date of birth of the traveler, as well as the vaccine product and the date (s) of administration of each dose received.”, recalls the consulate.

A certificate to be completed

It will also be necessary to complete a certificate on the vaccination status and the obligation of testing according to the Consulate General of France in Washington. It is available on the CDC website, in French.

Negative test

Even vaccinated a negative PCR or antigen test will be required from travelers, except for children under two years of age. It must be done 72 hours before boarding. “Thus, if the departure for the United States is at 22:00 on January 19, the traveler will have to present the negative result of a test carried out after 00:01 on January 16” specifies the French consulate.

Have you contracted Covid-19? It will still take two doses

This is the great unknown. The CDC press release does not say anything about people who contracted Covid and received a dose of the vaccine. If this pattern is recognized in France, Canada or the United Kingdom, the Americans do not detail this situation. If in doubt, it is better to make an appointment for a second dose now.
