OTTAWA, August 09, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Defining Moments Canada, a heritage awareness organization, is proud to announce a partnership with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Canada for the “Herzberg50” project, a commemoration of the 1971 Nobel Prize in Chemistry obtained by the eminent German-Canadian scientist Gerhard Herzberg. This partnership will also mark the 50th anniversary of the science and technology agreement between Canada and Germany. This project is part of the commitment of the German Embassy to commemorate great German-Canadians, and as part of the HERZBERG50 commemorative project of Determinants Canada.
2021 marks 50 years of cooperation between Canada and Germany in science and technology research, leading to more than 1,000 joint research projects in a variety of fields and increased mobility between the two countries for their researchers and their students. The scientific and technological agreement between these two countries has greatly contributed to the development of an important collaborative research relationship between Germany and Canada, a successful collaboration which is still bearing fruit after 50 years.
50 years ago now, Dr Gerhard Herzberg received the Nobel Prize in chemistry. Born and educated in Germany, Herzberg immigrated to Canada in 1935 and became a world-renowned researcher in the field of spectroscopy, moving first to the University of Saskatchewan and then to the National Research Council. Gerhard Herzberg was a strong voice for science policy in Canada, and is recognized today as one of the greatest scientists in Canadian history.
This collaboration between the Embassy of Germany and Determining Moments Canada will allow the design of a traveling exhibition on the life and impact of Gerhard Herzberg. It will reinforce the HERZBERG50 digital exhibit that will highlight Dr. Herzberg’s research and its impact on science policy and education in Canada. In addition, she will celebrate her personality and her incredible journey.
The exhibit will travel across Canada from early 2022, stopping at various museums, universities and research institutions that will serve as its hosts. To find out how to get involved or to find out how to host the exhibition, write to [email protected].
Defining Moments Canada and the German Embassy look forward to working together to mark these milestone anniversaries and to commemorate the continuing impact of Herzberg’s Nobel Prize as well as the science and technology agreement between the two countries.
“In 2021, we are honored to commemorate two pivotal events of incredible importance to Canada. Dr. Herzberg has always seen Canada as a ‘country recognized worldwide, and historically, as a country which has contributed to the advancement of science, art and literature.’ He believed that a Nobel Prize awarded to a Canadian could affect the public perception of science in Canada and, through our project, we want to contribute to an increased public awareness of the legacy and impact of Canadian scientific achievements, magnified through Herzberg’s commitment to research and his place as one of our greatest scientists. ”
– Neil Orford, President of Defining Moments Canada
“For Germany – a geographically small country lacking in natural resources – our cooperation in science and technology began in 1971 focused on Canada’s resources of energy, materials and space. Over the past five decades, this cooperation has evolved into a scientific partnership recognized worldwide for its excellence and contribution. Today, Canadian and German researchers can work together in fields that shape our future: life sciences, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, etc. ”
– Sabine Sparwasser, Ambassador of Germany
