Traveling Abroad? Here’s Why You Need to Consider Vaccines

According to the Studies Division of the Undersecretariat of Tourism, around 3.3 million Chileans travel abroad each year. And taking into account that vacations are just around the corner, it is advisable to take into consideration the vaccines that are recommended depending on the continent you are traveling to.

This is because in some countries there is a higher prevalence of certain diseases or even some that do not exist in Chile. For this reason, it is better to prevent them with a vaccine, avoiding possible viral and bacterial infections.

“It is what is known as traveler’s medicine. Anticipate so as not to put our health or vacations at risk. Among the most common preventive measures for these trips are vaccines (they vary depending on the destination to visit), preventive medications for areas where there is malaria (malaria) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PREP) in case risk is evaluated. of sexually transmitted infections,” explains the infectologist at Clínica Las Condes Alfonso Guzmán.

In the case of vaccines, there are some that are mandatory requirements to enter certain countries. Hence, the main advice is to obtain information on the official websites of each tourist destination or consult the airline. In any case, here we list the most common ones:

Yellow fever

Yellow fever is an acute, hemorrhagic viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The vaccine is recommended for those traveling to Brazil and the Amazon in general, as well as to Panama, Africa and some Southeast Asian countries.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is an inflammation of the liver caused by a virus that is transmitted by ingesting contaminated water or food. It is generally requested for trips to tropical countries, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Far East.

Malaria

Malaria (or malaria) is a disease caused by a Plasmodium parasite, which is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms of this illness may include fever, vomiting and/or headache. Currently, malaria is a problem in tropical or subtropical areas of Asia, Africa, and Central and South America.

Typhoid fever

Typhoid fever is a potentially fatal infectious disease caused by the bacteria Salmonella Typhi, which is usually transmitted through contaminated food and water. The vaccine is recommended for travelers going to the Amazon, Africa and Southeast Asia.

Anger

It is an intestinal infection caused by a bacteria that proliferates in areas with poor sanitary conditions, for example, when earthquakes or other natural disasters occur.

The infectious disease specialist also explains that vaccines must be inoculated at least 10 days before traveling to a risk area to allow an immune response to develop and achieve the objective of nullifying the action of the pathogen causing the infection.
