Travelers are welcome at Schiphol no more than 4 hours before the flight | To travel

Travelers at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands will only be allowed to enter the departure halls from tomorrow if their flight departs within four hours. It is a pilot measure with which the airport wants to prevent excessive crowds. Schiphol also asks passengers to take as little luggage as possible with them, so that the queues at check-in desks and security checks do not become too long.

Schiphol has been struggling for weeks with a structural staff shortage in, among other things, security and handlers. This made it busy in the terminals. Schiphol therefore called on travelers to arrive as early as possible due to the expected crowds. But now it appears that passengers arrive more than four hours before departure. Then the check-in counters are not yet open and the lines are longer.

After consultation with airlines, Schiphol furthermore requests passengers to take a maximum of one item of hand baggage with them or to put their hand baggage in the hold baggage. Travelers with only hand luggage can proceed directly to the security checkpoint, which would speed up the flow of passengers.

Things went wrong at Schiphol during the May holiday. One weekend a spontaneous strike among staff caused such a full departure hall that Schiphol called on people not to come to the airport. Another weekend, the airport requested airlines to cancel trips, because otherwise the crowds would be unmanageable.

This summer is expected to be just as busy as May. The measures that Schiphol is now announcing are part of an action plan to prevent further problems.
