After a series of assaults and thefts near the Pop Art nightclub, two brothers from the Traveler community were arrested, tried and convicted this afternoon. They have always denied a large part of the charges. Story of the trial.
In April, it was better not to hang out too much at night around Pop art in Castres, at the risk of ending up stripped of your valuables. On several occasions in recent weeks, revelers have marched to the police station claiming to be victims of assault and theft of their bank cards and mobile phones.
Each time the same speech from young men, sometimes still a little tipsy after their evening: between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., they were approached by two individuals with the air of travelers, between 20 and 30 years old, and of average build, who ask them if they have the time or a telephone. Before undergoing the lightning of blows, sometimes until the blood.

Two brothers from the travel community were tried today in immediate appearance after being arrested at the illegal camp in the parking lot of the former Aldi, in Mélou, during a meticulous police operation. Suspected of being the perpetrators of the assaults, they have thoroughly denied the accusations except for part of the night of April 23.
That evening, warned by a victim, the police seized the gray Citroën C4 Picasso wanted in the Mail district and a chase began to the other fixed area of La Vivarié, in the Castres countryside. For “fear of going into custody”, the driver rolled over the portcullis deployed at the entrance to the camp and took refuge inside. To calm the situation, the brothers’ mother will give the stolen phone to the police. “I had found it on the ground at Pop Art” defends one of the defendants, who admitted to being the driver.

If they were never recognized on a photographic board by the five victims, a bundle of clues detailed by the president of the court and then by the prosecution led to the two brothers until their arrest. Manhandled by questions from the court, and despite often clumsy answers, the brothers stuck to their guns. Aided by their lawyer, Me Escande, incisive to the point of pleading a quasi-relaxed: “When we condemn, it is because we have the proof. But here, we try to hang on to the branches. Beware of dangerous uncertainties. »
His colleague, Laïs Deniaud, defender of a civil party, insisted on the psychological damage to her client: “They fell on him two, they hounded him when he was returning from the evening and just wanted to go home. He has not been out in Castres for a month…”
For the public prosecutor represented by Freddy Marta, it was a question of the court “protecting the Castres” after a period “strewn with concern if not fear in the Castres nightlife”. “A single fact was already serious,” he insisted, under the eyes of the young fathers of families, with a criminal record already loaded.
After three hours of debate and deliberation, the court decided to follow the requisitions and to sentence the two defendants to two years in prison and their continued detention, under the invectives of the relatives against the magistrates.
