Travel Vaccinations and Precautions: Notify Your Family Doctor in Advance

It is recommended to notify the family doctor in advance to plan the immunization

The most common vaccines are against yellow fever and typhoid, as well as hepatitis A.

When planning vacations, the Ministry of Health, through the General Directorate of Public Health and Addictions, recommends that travelers find out about and get vaccinated against certain diseases that can occur in some exotic destinations.

For this, it is recommended to notify the Primary Care doctor between six and eight weeks before the trip to schedule the vaccinations well in advance. The most common are against yellow fever, when traveling to tropical or jungle areas; hepatitis A and typhoid fever, when travelers leave Europe; and anger, especially if the destination of the trip is to countries in Asia or Africa.

Precautions at destination

In addition to finding out about the diseases that can occur in our destination, the Ministry of Health recommends taking certain precautions to avoid infections. Thus, it warns that it is not advisable to drink water that is not bottled or consume ice whose origin is unknown, since most of the health problems that occur on trips abroad have to do with water that can cause diarrhea.

You should also be careful with food and cook it completely, do not leave it at room temperature, peel the fruit before eating it and maintain proper hand hygiene.

In addition, Health recommends taking a basic first-aid kit with you and including any personal hygiene item such as toothpaste, contact lens fluid or sunscreen, since some of these effects are difficult to find outside our borders.

In the cases in which it is necessary to travel with some medication due to being a chronic patient, in addition to said medications, documentation in paper and electronic format must be carried with the name, contact information of the doctor and medication that is being taken, as well as knowing the active ingredients of the drugs, since sometimes the trade name varies according to each country.

At the end of the trip, it is important to attend to possible symptoms the days after the return such as persistent diarrhoea, fever, vomiting or urinary or skin infections and contact your Primary Care doctor as soon as possible.
