Travel: Tuifly wants to reduce its fleet and close its Cologne location

Cologne / Hanover –

The travel group Tui wants to reduce the German holiday airline Tuifly by around half because of the corona crisis. Management presented the plans to employees on Thursday, a Tuifly spokesman said on Friday.

Tuifly halves its own fleet and closes locations

The aim is to halve the intended fleet of 39 Boeing 737 jets and to close several German locations such as Cologne, Bremen and Münster-Osnabrück. How many jobs will be lost will now become part of the discussions between management and employee representatives.

According to the spokesman, there are around 2,000 full-time positions at Tuifly, including 1,400 pilots and flight attendants. According to the news channel ntv, the jobs of 700 employees are on the verge, of which 230 are full-time. The spokesman did not want to confirm the numbers. The aim is to be able to utilize the reduced fleet throughout the year and not to have too many planes in the winter when there is little travel.

Tuifly: Business broken off by Corona

As with other airlines, Tuifly’s business has practically collapsed due to the Corona crisis. Up to seven of the Tuifly machines have been used for the Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings. These contracts expire, however, and Eurowings is also downsizing the fleet. Tui has already negotiated with the aircraft manufacturer Boeing that the group will only have to accept the new 737 Max aircraft ordered later.

Tuifly plans to resume the holiday flight on June 17. According to the spokesman, the start of an own long-distance offer is now on hold. Tuifly originally wanted to take vacationers from November to Mexico and the Dominican Republic with two Boeing 787 “Dreamliner” jets. In view of the Corona crisis, however, this is currently not sensible, the spokesman said.

Employee representatives are very critical of the plans for cuts – also given the fact that Tui is being supported at the same time with loans from the state development bank KfW to ensure solvency. “If there were to be a job cut financed by taxpayers’ money, it would be a big deal,” said a trade unionist from the German Press Agency.

Tuifly has eleven locations in Germany

Tuifly’s story began in 2006 when Tui decided to merge the two airlines Hapag-Loyd Flug and Hapag-Loyd Express (both owned by Tui AG) and operate under a common brand. Since the delivery of city connections to Air Berlin in October 2009, Tuifly has seen itself as a holiday airline, both for short and medium and long-haul routes.

Tuifly has a total of eleven locations in Germany: Berlin-Tegel, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Hanover, Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden, Cologne / Bonn, Munich, Nuremberg, Saarbrücken, Stuttgart, Paderborn / Lippstadt. (tw, dpa)
