The September 11 Memorial & Museum has been open to visitors since May. Where the Twin Towers once stood, it is a reminder of the almost 3,000 people who lost their lives in the 2001 terrorist attacks. A destroyed fire engine is on display, recordings of the last phone calls can be heard – but the victims’ personal belongings are the most touching. If you need some fresh air after the museum, you should stroll along the High Line from the Meatpacking District. The disused elevated railway line has been beautifully planted and revitalized. At a height of ten meters, the second most popular park in the city extends to 30th Street.

The path through the heavy, gold-framed entrance door not only leads to one of the most venerable luxury hotels in the world, but to another world. One that seems out of date. The walls in the lobby are painted with European landscapes and portraits, the telephone on the baroque table still has a rotary dial. Ladies in hats meet for a biscuit, soft piano music can be heard from the bar. Even burgers are served under a silver bell.
The Plaza Athénée looks a bit like the US version of the British historical series “Downton Abbey”, with the difference that the set is real. The almost 65-year-old house is elegantly quiet. Behind the heavy curtains, one does not notice that the big city is raging outside. The building is only one block away from Central Park, right on the Madison Avenue shopping mile.

The Upper East Side is now considered a dusty district, the average age is significantly higher than in Soho or Brooklyn. The money nobility lives and works in Uptown. This is also reflected in the first house on the square, the Plaza Athénée. The suites are furnished with velvet couches, marble sinks, and mahogany dressers – and are larger than most two-bedroom apartments in town. Staff in coats of clothing carry their Louis Vuitton garment bags to the guests’ rooms.
The Plaza Athénée is an offshoot of the traditional Parisian hotel of the same name – and interprets old European charm the American way. Alain Ducasse cooks on Avenue Montaigne, and Dior runs an atelier. Crystal cosmopolitan and truffled popcorn are served on 64th Street in Manhattan.
