Travel: these 41 countries impose Covid insurance


Some countries have decided to tighten their entry rules after the Covid-19 pandemic. More than forty now require insurance to cover medical expenses, including repatriation.

Algeria, Bahamas, Philippines… So many countries popular with tourists that they are restricting access to their territory. The Omicron wave has caused a new stir in tourism policies around the world. Because if the borders are reopened, it is not unconditional. Initially considered optional, travel insurance that can cover possible medical expenses related to Covid-19 has become mandatory in 41 countries.

Located mainly in Asia, America or Africa, these states sometimes impose strict conditions on coverage: care and hospitalization, quarantine, medical repatriation. Of course, the rules are different depending on the territory. The Argentine Embassy in France specifies that all travelers must «pagspresent a document that proves that you have medical assistance insurance that covers the benefits of hospitalization, isolation and medical transfer for those who test positive, suspects or close contacts». For Thailand, a medical insurance with a minimum coverage of 50,000 dollars (about 44,000 euros) is required.

So how do you make sure you travel serenely? It is recommended to call your bank first. In fact, some credit card offers (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) already allow you to fulfill all the conditions.

Another solution: contract with an insurer. According to the online comparator Insurly, three companies offer these services for trips of less than 90 days. The price range is very wide depending on the country of destination, the profile of the insured or the duration of the trip. For example, a 70-year-old man will pay €186.30 for a three-month stay in Israel, while a 22-year-old will pay €54 to discover Thailand for three weeks.
