Storage on the mountain: The buildings of the Ksar Mourabitine served for centuries as storage for the Berber families around Tataouine.
More than 60 travel experts completed a five-day program that left nothing to be desired in terms of variety – from the fascinating night sky over the desert to the thrill of a hot air balloon.
The coast is one of the country’s long-running tourist favorites. But the interior of the country in the south has real treasures to offer. The goal of the tour was therefore Tozeur, the gateway to the desert and the nearby salt lakes.
“Feel the magic of the south” was the motto of the Destination Forum organized by fvw|TravelTalk and DRV in cooperation with the Tunisian Tourist Office and Tunisair.
And the impressions of the seven-day trip were indeed magical.
On the following days, from the Hotel Palm Beach in Tozeur, we set off on a discovery tour in an off-road vehicle with overnight stays in the desert, in small boutique hotels and accommodations that were modeled on the storage chambers and dwellings of the Berbers.

More than 60 participants, four tours, 24 four-wheel drive vehicles – the numbers reflect the effort put in by the Destination Forum. Sponsors included Tunisair, the hotels Palm Beach and Amantara Sahara Tozeur, the incoming agency Tacapes Tour and the Bedouin Tour team.

The participants could choose from four different tours: from contemplative with benefits for body and soul to authentically nomadic and close to the world of the Berber to sporty and active.
What all tours had in common: detours to the locations where the Star Wars episodes were filmed, grandiose impressions of nature, including overwhelming canyons and waterfalls near the desert.
Not to forget the local cuisine, which always aroused enthusiasm among the guests from Germany, as well as the warmth of the people, who have great hopes for a revival of tourism.
So much for the magic, but what about the marketing opportunities for the fascinating south? The final workshop in the luxury hotel Amantara Sahara Tozeur provided answers.
DRV President Norbert Fiebig is concerned with making “Tunisia in all its tourism breadth” better known without neglecting the “bread-and-butter business” on the coast.
During his two-day visit to Tozeur, Tunisia’s Minister of Tourism, Moez Belhassine, also underlined the importance of German-Tunisian cooperation in the field of tourism. In 2019 the country still had 289,000 German guests, this year 180,000 guests are expected.
His appeal to travel agencies: “Help us with your recommendations and advice!” Given the dense touring program, there shouldn’t be a lack of that.
