One in five medical records relate to a traveler who has tested positive for COVID-19 abroad, travel insurance company VAB announced in a statement on Friday.
While the summer vacation began only a week ago, travel insurers are seeing the first cases related to the coronavirus arrive.
VAB claims to receive more corona files than expected. “These are mainly people who travel in small groups and who must be quarantined on site: we then provide them with 75 euros per person per day, for seven days, as well as a suitable return flight”, specifies Joni Junes, spokesperson for the travel insurance company. VAB has noticed that most people who go on vacation are willing to follow the rules and be in order with all documents, but still expect an increase in the number of cases related to the coronavirus once the holiday period well underway.
The Touring travel insurer has also received several corona files. “Currently, it is 200 to 300 cases,” says spokesman Danny Smagghe. “We expect an increase in the coming weeks. When traveling, people are a little more nonchalant, but a lot of people stay in their bubble and go to a holiday park or to nature ”
“The vacation barometer has already shown that many people prefer to take vacation with their own bubble in a quiet place, they don’t go very far. Families avoid crowds, ”explains Xavier Van Caneghem of Europ Assistance, who has so far received few files concerning the coronavirus. “The number of medical records is a bit in line with previous years, but those related to COVID-19 have not really arrived yet. People are educating themselves on what exactly to do if they contract the virus abroad. ” Xavier Van Caneghem points out, however, that the holiday season has only just started.
