With her travel agency in Oer-Erkenschwick, Ursula Wenig is fighting for bare survival in times of the Corona, like many of her industry colleagues.
Sometimes Ursula Wenig, owner of the Stimberg travel agencies at Stimbergstrasse 104 in Oer-Erkenschwickher heart pounding a little when she looks into her e-mail inbox. “Customers write to me late in the evening or on Sunday and threaten me with a lawyer. That kind of thing puts a lot of strain on me, ”says Ursula Wenig. The committed travel agent is desperate: “We have had almost no bookings since mid-March. Since the spring we have been almost exclusively busy handling canceled trips. “
Corona crisis means double work in Oer-Erkenschwick
And that brings with it two problems. “Sometimes a lot of e-mails have to be written back and forth before we have fulfilled customer requests. Many tour operators let us down. Sometimes I have the feeling that they have disappeared. In any case, we hardly get any support. And there is no question of goodwill, ”says Wenig. Then there is the sales problem. “We’ve been doing double work for months. First we advised customers on booking travel, now we are helping with cancellation. And that means in the vast majority of cases that we don’t get any commission. That goes to existence. “
Travel agency moves to Oer-Erkenschwick
Ursula Wenig had to send her two employees to short-time work months ago. She is only present three times a week in her travel agency at Stimbergstrasse 104 in Oer-Erkenschwick. “How good that there was immediate aid from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia right at the beginning of the corona pandemic. And currently there are so-called bridging aids. But of course they don’t make up for the otherwise usual turnover, ”explains Ursula Wenig. Ursula Wenig, like many of her colleagues in the industry, hopes that she will relax the pandemic situation and that business will start again. For the Stimberg travel agency, however, this will take place in a new location. “We’re moving”, explains Ursula Wenig. At the end of the year the Stimberg travel agency moves to Stimbergstraße 97 in Oer-Erkenschwick. “Hopefully we can start again there,” says Wenig.
