Travel advice Greek islands tightened to orange on Tuesday morning | NOW

The travel advice for the Greek islands will be tightened from yellow to orange on Tuesday morning, the ministry reports Foreign Affairs Monday evening.

The travel advice is being tightened, because the number of people infected with the corona virus during a holiday on the Greek islands has risen sharply, a spokesman for Foreign Affairs told NU.nl.

“On the basis of these figures, the Greek islands have been designated as a risk area in consultation with the RIVM,” said the spokesperson.

If the orange code applies to an area, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises traveling to that area only if it is really necessary. A holiday trip, for example, is not.

Travelers from the Greek islands are recommended to go into quarantine at home for ten days from Tuesday morning.

The Peloponnese peninsula and mainland Greece remain ‘yellow’. There is no quarantine advice for those areas and unnecessary travel is allowed.

‘Most people finish their holiday’

If the travel advice changes to orange, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises Dutch nationals in the country to go home when the trip is not necessary, because the advice may have consequences for the travel insurance.

But most travelers probably finish their holiday, says a spokesman for the umbrella travel organization ANVR.

“Overall, travelers may now complete their vacation and return on regular flights. Should tour operators pick them back earlier, they will let their customers know.”

The decision is a “big blow” to the tourism industry, the spokesman said. The ANVR believes that travel advice differs too much within Europe and that better coordination is needed.
