Travalent Dengue Vaccine (TDV): Requirements, Efficacy, and Safety Explained by Sukamto Koesnoe

Sukamto Koesnoe, Chair of the Adult Immunization Task Force of the Association of Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI), explained in more depth about the dengue hemorrhagic fever (DBD) vaccine known as Travalent Dengue Vaccine (TDV), including requirements for vaccination.

“TDV has had its distribution permit approved by BPOM since 2022, which means it has passed various research test phases, phase one, phase two, phase three, with various evidence, one of which is evidence of safety,” he said when met in Jakarta, Sunday (10/9 /2023).

Launch Between, Sukamto explained that the efficacy of the TDV vaccine circulating in Indonesia is 80 percent. This amount can be achieved when the specified dose has been reached, namely two vaccinations.

According to the world health organization World Health Organization (WHO), vaccine efficacy is the vaccine’s ability to provide benefits to the vaccinated individual. The benefits in question are the benefits of living healthily and being protected from dangerous diseases.

“The requirements for dengue fever vaccination must be carried out when you are healthy and not allergic to vaccines, as well as people aged 6 to a maximum of 45 years, two doses or two vaccinations,” explained Sukamto.

In fact, in various other countries TDV can be given to people up to the age of 60 years. However, Sukamto said that the distribution permit obtained through BPOM in Indonesia for the time being has a maximum age of 45 years.

Similar to vaccines in general, Sukamto said that people with weak or low immune systems are not recommended to get the vaccination. If in doubt, you can consult a doctor first.

“Everyone who is healthy can get the vaccine, but people who are taking medicines that suppress the immune system, such as immunosuppressants for example, and people with genetically weak immune conditions, should not be given it,” he added.

“TDV is also safe to give to people, both those who have previously been infected with dengue fever and those who have not,” Sukamto added.

To date, TDV is available in various public and private health facilities. For one dose, currently the price is around IDR 500 thousand, and to achieve maximum efficacy two doses or two vaccinations are needed. (ant/dvn/ham)
