Trash Containerization: Improving Sanitation and Eliminating Rats in NYC

Trash in containers, rather than left in bags on the sidewalk, will soon be the norm not only for businesses in the city, but also for homes with 9 units or less.

The mayor at a news conference Wednesday said the changes they’ve made to trash regulations in recent months are working.

“Residential garbage containerization will arrive this summer:

“🚮Garbage will go into a container instead of bags piled on the sidewalk

“🐀No more all-you-can-eat rat buffets

“🏠This will cover 95% of New York’s residential buildings,” the mayor wrote in a message on social media.

“This is part of this plan to eliminate garbage bags, better quality of life improvements for all New Yorkers. And it also eliminates the rats. The rats can chew through the black bags, but they can’t chew through a container,” said Vincent Gragnani , spokesperson for the Sanitation Department.

Gragnani explained that the last phase of garbage containerization will require special containers that will automate garbage collection.

“Official New York City containers will be available at significantly lower prices than other containers,” Gragnani added. “They are designed for mechanized harvesting.”

Authorities hope this will keep our streets clean and, more importantly, keep the rats away.

The city will require containers to have a New York City-specific design. They are working with a supplier to create them, but also say they will be affordable, although some residents are skeptical.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea, because that puts all the weight on the people who live in small, small houses and they always say that they are going to give money to add different methods to remove rats, but they never work,” he said. Brandon Guzman.

The changes officials have already made, including changing trash takeout schedules and requiring food businesses to use bins, are already having positive impacts and they hope to continue that progress.

“This strategy is paying off. 311 calls about rats decreased by 20% this summer compared to the previous year and also in rat mitigation zones they decreased by 45%,” said Gragnani.

The new rules will come into effect in autumn next year.
