Transportation System Operates Normally After Dangerous Flooding: City Recovers from Intense Rain

After the dangerous flooding due to the intense rain on Friday, which hit our city, generating delays in the subway and the suspension of some lines, the transportation system operated regularly this Saturday.

Ramón Rosario, resident of the sector says:

“I had to stay home all day yesterday. Today, it is possible.”

From the Union Street station in Brooklyn, we found minimal traces of the storm’s passage. At this particular point, for example, there were water leaks in the walls and, of course, delays.

However, the MTA confirmed the restoration of service with weekend schedules operating as usual.

Governor Kathy Hochul reiterated that when the MTA stops, the entire city comes to a standstill. She also pointed out that New York’s sewer system can only handle rainfall levels of less than two inches per hour.

For his part, Janno Lieber, president of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, explained that given the prediction of bad weather, the agency was prepared with pumps to remove water from subway stops.

And he highlighted that 99 percent of the bus lines were in service to ensure that thousands of passengers could reach their destinations.

One day after the storm, tranquility arrived for many passengers.

“We are going by train, but I did check availability and the trains are saturated. In fact, we are taking one at 1 in the afternoon, but I do know that they are already oversold, so let’s take a little risk and see what happens,” explains Isadora Paz, a tourist affected by the inclement weather.

“Today a little calmer, today a little better than yesterday,” says José Díaz, resident of the sector and Subway user.

And the president of Manhattan asserts that the city must take more effective actions to be even more strong in the face of natural disasters.

Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine said:

“Yesterday was very hard and it will not be the last time, this is happening more and more frequently. We need to improve our system so we don’t have to close New York City every time it rains hard. The mere act of planting a tree in any street or park absorbs thousands of gallons of water when there is heavy rain so that the sewers are not overwhelmed, they are simple measures that can be done today and do not cost that much.
