Transportation rates on cargo airlines increased by 20%: Amacarga

Mexico City., With almost three months to go until December, the season in which imports of products for the Christmas holidays increase, air transportation rates for Mexican cargo lines have increased by 20 percent, announced the Mexican Association of Cargo Agents (Amacarga).

Juan Pablo Pacheco, president of Amacarga, said that airlines have capacity limitations due to the focus on transporting passengers and luggage, especially on return flights for summer vacations, and as a result, space for cargo loading has been reduced, which intensifies competition and causes an increase in rates.

“There are increases in rates for air transport services, by 20 percent on average, and 10 percent for maritime traffic to and from Spain… We are at a key time of the year, with less than four months left until the Christmas sales season and we are entering the period of greatest movement of air cargo, in addition to the fact that we are facing a bottleneck in Spanish ports that has impacted maritime rates,” he said.

He said that the months leading up to December are “crucial” to ensure that goods arrive on time for the Christmas season, when the largest volume of shipments of electronic products, fashion goods such as clothing and footwear, wines and food, among many others from the Iberian Peninsula, take place.

He pointed out that for several weeks now, the main Spanish ports have been experiencing congestion and bottlenecks that have caused delays in deliveries and a phenomenon known as “blank sailing,” where routes are postponed or changed due to lack of capacity.

“There have been some impacts on maritime rates to and from Spain, by 10 percent on average, which means paying approximately one thousand dollars more for each container transported,” explained the president of Amacarga.
