The Singapore Anti-Corruption Authority told Agence France-Presse that the Minister of Transport was arrested after being suspended from work, as part of an investigation targeting one of the city’s richest people – the state.
The Office of Corrupt Practices Investigation told AFP NS. Eswaran “arrested on July 11, 2023” and then “released on bail.”
He added that Aung Bing Singh, hotel tycoon and one of Singapore’s richest people, was arrested on the same day and released on bail. However, the commission did not reveal details related to the investigation that is taking place in this country, the least corrupt in the world.
Ministers in Singapore receive salaries equivalent to the highest wages in the private sector to curb corruption.
Despite the confiscation of the passports of the detainees, the Anti-Corruption Commission confirmed that it is examining requests to travel abroad “for each case separately.”
She added that she had “accepted Aung Bing Sing’s request to travel abroad,” but made it clear that she had increased his bail to one hundred thousand Singapore dollars (about seventy thousand euros).
She pointed out that “after his return, he must report to the Bureau of Investigation into Corrupt Practices and hand over his passport.”
