Frankfurt (dpa / lhe) – Experts see the extension of the tram from the outskirts of Frankfurt to the west of the Offenbach district as a promising project. The local public transport company Frankfurt announced on Friday that a first study had sounded out the feasibility and potential and came to a positive result. With the extension of line 17, the cities of Neu-Isenburg, Langen and Dreieich could be connected to the tram network.
The structural challenges are now to be clarified by a feasibility study costing around 300,000 euros. In addition, there must be a cost-benefit study. This is what the mayors of the three cities in the district and Frankfurt’s head of transport, Klaus Oesterling, want to recommend to the committees of their cities.
Around 130,000 residents and 90,000 jobs in the three municipalities in the Offenbach district would benefit from the tram connection, according to a press release. Daily passenger demand on the route that currently ends on the outskirts of Frankfurt could triple what it is today. The experts expected around 5,000 new customers every day. This could save 50,000 car kilometers every day, according to the ecological potential. In addition, the heavily used S-Bahn connection to Darmstadt could be relieved.
