Transport – Dresden – TU Dresden and Uni Kassel: Project on sustainable transport – economy

Dresden / Kassel (dpa / lhe) – The TU Dresden and the University of Kassel are starting a joint research project on how sustainable transport can be successful in the future. As part of the “MOTUS” project, the TU Dresden announced on Monday how municipalities could design their transport systems to be sustainable and resistant to so-called disruptive events over the next three years. At the end of the day, a simulation platform is to be created with the help of which municipalities can run through scenarios in order to be able to adapt their planning.

The researchers describe the corona pandemic, structural change-related scenarios such as in the lignite mining areas and climate change-related scenarios of extreme proportions, such as recently observed in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Ahrweiler, as disruptive.

All of this has an impact on people’s mobility behavior. For example, the usual corona-related routes are no longer applicable, and alternatives to previously tried-and-tested means of transport are being sought. So it is not surprising that there are currently delivery bottlenecks for certain bicycles, municipalities introduced pop-up cycle paths at short notice and many people opted for cars again. It is likely that such changes will have to be mastered more often in the future.

For the development of the simulation platform, the researchers are now looking for two model municipalities that will be included in the development of the project and that will provide traffic data for this purpose.

According to the information, the Federal Ministry of Transport is funding the research project with 800,000 euros. Involved are the professorships for traffic process automation, for traffic ecology and for automotive engineering at the faculty of traffic sciences “Friedrich List” of the TU Dresden as well as the professorship for bicycle traffic and local mobility at the University of Kassel. According to the announcement, the company Teralytics, which according to the information already carried out evaluations of cellular data for the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) during the corona pandemic, is also there.
