Transport Canada lifts the Boeing 737 MAX flight ban

According to the US aviation authority FAA and the Brazilian civil aviation authority ANAC, on January 20, 2021, the Canadian aviation authority Transport Canada will lift the flight ban imposed on the Boeing 737 MAX after two accidents. The three Canadian airlines Air Canada, WestJet and Sunwing have announced that they will be returning to scheduled flight operations in the next few days.

The Canadian authorities will publish an Airworthiness Directive (AD), which will set out the requirements that must be met in order to get the Boeing 737 MAX back into flight operations. Transport Canada already published at the end of December which changed contents are necessary for the crew training in order to fly the model. That is why the carriers have since been able to prepare for the 737 MAX’s commissioning. Air Canada has announced that it will be using the pattern on routes between Toronto and Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton and Winnipeg from February 1st.

Independent evaluation of the jet

The aviation authority emphasizes that it carried out its own evaluation of the model that was independent of other authorities and that it invested well over 15,000 man hours in evaluating the 737 MAX.

“As part of Transport Canada’s independent review process, the department’s civil aviation certification and aviation safety experts were instrumental in making modifications to the aircraft design. In addition, the authority has gone even further and has introduced its own Canadian measures to further increase the safety of the aircraft type “, announced Transport Canada. They have worked intensively with the FAA, EASA, ANAC, Canadian airlines and trade unions to implement the appropriate measures for a return of the aircraft to flight operations.

In contrast to the US aviation authority FAA, Transport Canada requires a possibility for the cockpit crew to manually deactivate the stick shaker if it is activated by the failure of both angle of attack sensors. The authority’s test pilots had evaluated this system and found that it would significantly reduce the pilots’ workload in such a situation.
