Chisinau –
Separatists in an Eastern European country named Moldovanamely separatists in the region Transnistria, asked Moscow for protection. It is predicted that this will become a new conflict point in a long conflict Russia versus Ukraine.
Transnistria is located between Moldova and Ukraine, or very close to southwest Ukraine. Politically, Transnistria is close to Russia and its citizens also speak Russian. If it is true that Moscow controls Transnistria in the future, of course Ukraine could be ‘pinched’ from the east and west, or more precisely the southwest.
Reported by AFP, Wednesday (28/2/2024), pro-Russian rebel officials in the breakaway region of Transnistria in Moldova asked Russia for “protection”.
Russia responded that one of its “priorities” was protecting the small plot of land, which has been de facto controlled by pro-Russian forces since the collapse of the Soviet Union but is internationally recognized as part of Moldova.
The Moldovan government rejected “propaganda statements” from pro-Russian separatists, adding that the region “benefits from the European Union’s policy of peace, security and economic integration”.
At a special congress on the region – the seventh in its history – lawmakers passed a resolution calling on the Russian parliament to “protect” Transnistria from growing Moldova pressure.
They say the Moldovan government in Chisinau has launched an “economic war” against Transnistria, blocking important imports with the aim of turning it into a “ghetto” or in Indonesian which can be translated as “underdeveloped and undeveloped area”.
“The current decision of the congress (asking for Russian protection) cannot be ignored by the international community,” the breakaway republic’s foreign policy chief (Transnistria), Vitaly Ignatiev, said at the meeting.
“We are discussing a request for diplomatic support,” he later told Russian state television.
Since Moscow began a major offensive against Ukraine, the Moldovan government has been worried that the Kremlin will use Transnistria to open a new front in the southwest, towards Ukraine’s Odessa.
This small region was rocked by an unexplained explosion in 2022 that military analysts believe was an attempt by Russia to drag the region into the conflict.
Then, in March 2023, Transnistria’s pro-Russian leadership accused Kyiv of an assassination attempt against its leader, a charge Ukraine denied.
The Kremlin has around 1,500 troops permanently stationed in the region, and has warned Ukraine and Moldova that attacking them would have serious consequences. The conflict situation between Russia and Ukraine has become increasingly tense with this development. Whatever it is, of course everyone hopes for peace.
