Moldova has not approached Ukraine with a request for military assistance in resolving the conflict in Transnistria.
President Vladimir Zelensky announced this at a press conference on February 25.
“Our war continues – this is the first thing. We are at war with the Russian Federation – this is the second. Moldova did not contact us with any such requests (ed. – about possible military assistance) – this is the third. Fourth, I am not sure that the Pridnestrovians will agree to this (ed. – “annexation” to the Russian Federation). I’m not sure, from the information I have,” Zelensky said.
Danger from Transnistria: what is known
It was previously reported that at the end of February the unrecognized Transnistria may ask Putin to “join” the Russian Federation. On February 28, Transnistria plans to hold a congress of deputies of all levels for the first time in 18 years, and it is there that they can appeal to the Russian dictator about annexing the region.
At the same time, according to military expert Vadim Denisenko, the likelihood of a sudden announcement of the annexation of Transnistria to Russia is close to zero.
In turn, the deputy commander of the 3rd assault brigade, ex-commander of the Azov regiment, Maxim Zhorin, calls the possibility of the official “annexation” of the unrecognized Transnistria to Russia quite real.
Today, February 25, the Main Intelligence Directorate reported that the non-separatists of Transnistria on February 28 do not plan to appeal to Vladimir Putin with a request for “inclusion” into Russia.
Meanwhile, ISW reported that the group of Russian troops, which is now concentrated in the unrecognized Transnistria, does not pose a military threat to Ukraine.
