Moldova’s separatist region of Transnistria asks Russia for protection from pressure from the Moldovan government.

The request to the Russian Parliament was made at a meeting organized by the so-called Transnistrian Parliament on Wednesday, news agencies say.

On February 21, the Transnistrian parliament announced that it would hold a meeting to discuss the request to join Russia.

– Transnistria is subject to social and economic pressure, which is in direct conflict with European principles and approaches in the protection of human rights and free trade, reads the resolution of the meeting, according to news agency Reuters.

The leadership of the Transnistrian region previously said they were dissatisfied with the recent economic decisions of the Moldovan government.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, defending the interests of the citizens of Transnistria is of primary importance and the request will be carefully considered, reports Russian state media Ria Novosti.

Moldova: The request for help is propaganda

Moldovan government spokesperson Daniel Voda commented on Transnistria’s request for help as propaganda.

– This is a propaganda event and a trap that does not deserve the attention of foreign journalists or sensational headlines, Voda stated.

The country’s president Maia Sandu according to Moldova is still committed to a peaceful solution to the Transnistrian conflict.

– Today, the government is promoting the economic reintegration of the country with small steps, Sandu said on Wednesday at the summit of Southeast Asian countries.

Pro-Russian forces have controlled the region since the collapse of the Soviet Union, although it is internationally recognized as part of Moldova.

A year ago, there were more than 1,500 Russian soldiers in the Transnistrian region.
