India has seen more than double the number of COVID-19 cases reported four days ago. According to data from the Indian Ministry of Health, there were 58,097 new cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday (4/1/2022) bringing the total national cases to more than 35 million.
The COVID-19 death toll also increased by 534 cases, including the latest death toll in the southern state of Kerala of 423. The cumulative total of COVID-19 deaths nationwide stands at 482,551, according to Reuters records.
What happened in India?
India has been attacked by the Omicron variant since the end of 2021, the number continues to increase rapidly, resulting in the total addition of COVID-19 cases. The trend of cases, which had previously been recorded as low at below 10 thousand cases, has again jumped to above 30 thousand.
Previously, the former chief epidemiologist of the Indian Council of Medical Research, Dr Lalit Kant, predicted that India would be hit by a new wave of COVID-19 due to the Omicron variant. According to him, the wave could start to occur in early March 2022.
According to him, it is very likely that tens of thousands of beds for COVID-19 patients will be needed.
“The number of hospitalized patients is likely to peak in early March. The projection is that 33,000 hospital beds and 7,500 ICU beds will be needed,” said Dr Kant, quoted by CBS News.
