A transgender woman sued New York City for $22 million after being held in a men’s detention center on Rikers Islandwhere she was allegedly attacked and harassed.
Identify Ali Mileswho calls himself Dylan, She was detained at Rikers Island from June 14, 2022 until July of the same year.. She was later taken to Arizona.
Miles was charged with several crimes in June 2022, including felony-level stalking, filing false reports of a crime, and aggravated stalking.
The transgender woman is suing the New York City Department of Corrections, the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation and other people for the treatment he received in prison, which allegedly included rape, physical assault and harassment.
The lawsuit refers to the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003, which seeks to reduce and eradicate rape in prisons.
The document was presented in August 2023 and establishes that Miles was born a biological man, but identifies as a transgender womanreported Fox News.
“Miles wears women’s clothing and in his entire appearance expresses himself as a person of the female gender,” the lawsuit states.
According to the lawsuit, Miles was “placed in a male housing unit despite her objections, court orders, and her requests to be housed with women”. The attorney claimed the defendants “delayed and denied him access to medical care.”
“[Miles] was raped/sodomized on two (2) different occasions by the same inmate, was attacked and beaten by the same aggressor, causing him to fracture his ribs, and suffered permanent blindness as a result of being sprayed in the face with chemicals. “says the document. “All of this caused him painful and lasting damage.
“The illegal conduct of the defendants was a direct result of the widespread practices and customs [de Rikers] of discrimination and deliberate indifference against transgender people.”
The jurist further alleged thatThe New York authorities “ignored her repeated pleas for help and protection from the threats and sexual victimization to which they had exposed her.”.
The lawsuit says that a correctional officer told Mile that “we don’t do trans things here”which, according to the document, is a violation of civil rights law.
