A Scottish court has sentenced a transgender woman to eight years in prisonwhose rape conviction sparked controversy because she was initially held in a women-only prison, Reuters reported.

Isla Bryson was charged in January for the rape of two women in 2016 and 2019, when she had not yet changed her gender and was a man named Adam Graham.

Initially, she was held in cornton vale women’s prison in central Scotland, before the Scottish Government confirmed Bryson would be moved after campaigners, politicians and UN human rights experts raised concerns for the safety of the remaining prisoners.

The Bryson scandal unfolded just weeks after the Scottish Parliament passed a bill to facilitate gender reassignmentwhich drew criticism from women’s rights activists who argued that male rapists could use it to gain access to single-sex spaces such as bathrooms.

Then the British government said it would block the legal changeas it will have an impact on equality issues in other parts of the island.
