The vast Voies Lyonnaises project, these bicycle “highways”, desired by the elected environmentalists of the City of Lyon and the Metropolis, continues. Consultations and discussions with residents too.

Ongoing consultations and debates

From October 9 to November 12, 2023, the consultation will take place on part of the Lyon route 8 (VL8) for its part between the quays of the Rhône in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon and the 8th arrondissement at Boulevard Pinel.

At the same time, consultation is underway for the VL7 located between the Churchill Bridge (Lyon 4ᵉ and Lyon 6ᵉ) and the rue Garibaldi / rue du Pensionnat crossroads (Lyon 3ᵉ).

We take stock of the planned work and the transformation of very important streets and axes in Lyon.

A cycle path at the entrance to the Tête d’or

For this consultation on the VL7, it is planned to maintain a cycle path in both directions on the pont Churchill (Lyon 4th).

The Metropolis wishes to develop a two-way path on Avenue de Grande-Bretagne to the right of Place Leclerc (Porte des Enfants du Rhône) at Tête d’Or park in the 6th arrondissement. The old cycle path between the trees will be dedicated to pedestrians.

The Boulevard des Belges cycle path postponed

The layout of the boulevard des Belges between the quays of the Rhône and rue Garibaldi “is postponed to a later mandate”, because the development of a secure cycle path requires making the portion one-way so as to retain the lane dedicated to buses. This possibility will be studied as part of the strong public transport line project called the “Centre-West Line” planned for 2030.

“In the meantime, cyclists will therefore continue to travel on a narrow cycle lane towards the east, and in a bus corridor open to bicycles towards the west”, regrets the association La Ville à Vélo.

A new cycle path on Garibaldi Street

It is then planned the development of a two-way path on rue Garibaldi (6th) between Boulevard des Belges and Rue Montgolfier and between Rue Tronchet and Rue Cuvier. The bicycle path will be on the west side of the roadway in place of one of the automobile traffic lanes.

At the same time, work is planned on rue Garibaldi between the 3rd and 7th to create a cycle path, revegetate and demolish the last hopper on the axis.

VL7 also provides for a “velorue” in the side alley of rue Garibaldi between rue Montgolfier and rue Tronchet and between rue Cuvier and rue Vauban and the maintenance of the existing one (a two-way track) on the street Garibaldi between rue Vauban and rue du Pensionnat with secure intersections.

For this part of Voie Lyonnaise 7, the work is planned from 2025 to 2026 for a budget of 3.5 million euros.

Two car lanes instead of four on the University Bridge

The other consultation which is opening concerns the VL8 crossing the 7th and 8th arrondissement.

It is planned to redevelop the University Bridge which crosses the Rhône with a two-way cycle path, removing two out of four car lanes. A contraflow bus corridor will be created and the wide two-way cycle path will take place on the south side.

On the University Streetthe project provides for the removal of one or two lanes of automobile traffic and the creation of a wide cycle path on the south side which will be separated from automobile traffic.

The rue Camille Roy will be redeveloped to maintain the current one-way street and parking on the south side. On the north side, the parking lot will be removed and a two-way cycle path created.

Work between 2024 and 2025

To go to the 8th arrondissement, the rue Marius Berliet between the Pont de l’Épargne and Avenue Jean Mermoz will ultimately not be developed during this mandate. Cyclists will continue to travel on the bus lane.

On theavenue Jean Mermozbetween Place du Bachut and Boulevard Ambroise Paré, the project provides for the development of a two-way cycle path on the south side of the road.

Work on this VL between the 7th and 8th arrondissements will start in the second half of 2024 until 2025 for a budget of 7.1 million euros.
