There are still human records of the consequences caused by industrial activity in the port city of Ilo, in past decades. Also the effects on the landscape and fauna. I have spoken with some of these people and in none of them did I see even a hint of revenge, much less an accusation against the refinery and steel industry activities that caused such great damage, which will continue in various morbidities over time. And although the results of these processes of deterioration of human, animal and flora health have been improved environmentally, there is still much more to do and where a greater role is expected from both authorities and businessmen.
A bunch of data: New York is New York thanks to the donations made by business patrons in achieving better quality of life, in the construction of social and educational facilities, parks and squares, etc. Taking a walk through New York is to travel inch by inch through the history of North American patronage in pursuit of better quality of life. Along with this, Paris is Paris because of its monarchs and politicians, Rome because of its Popes and architects, Athens because of Plato, Aristotle and Pericles.
The Arborizarte Plan is proposed as the planting of 100 thousand trees for the port city of Ilo. Although the international manuals of the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend 1 tree for every 3 urban inhabitants, we are committed to something more: 1.5 trees per inhabitant, taking into account the population increase that the city of Ilo will experience in the coming decades, environmental conflicts and that the trees will only provide their landscape and climatic benefits after five years of their planting, in the best of cases.
And for what reasons do we advocate for a plan or project that transforms the city of Ilo into a tree-lined space. The benefits of all kinds that trees present (which we could estimate, according to research, at about 300 dollars / year), well deserve attention from the authorities, public and private institutions and citizens in general. Ilo is a city subject to many threats, some internal and others external, whose management and planning must transform them into opportunities for change and strengths. The closest of the climate and seismic estimates are related to increases in temperatures and precipitation and a possible and foreseeable tsunami, among others. In all these episodes of nature, trees play an important role in protecting individuals, society and its material goods.
Ilo can be a beautiful city with few resources, programming and investing in urban quality through a tree plantation project of the main avenues and tree masses in the dry ravines and slopes as parks, repairing environmentally fragile sectors, whose treatment would transform them into corridors biological, recovering native species, such as tara, molle, carob, etc. and also restore the fauna typical of a maritime city.
