Transforming Education: The Role of Technology in the Classroom and Higher Education

Throughout the last decades, the education has undergone a remarkable evolution driven by the technological advances. The integration of technology in the classroom has radically transformed the way students learn and teachers teach, providing innovative opportunities and resources.

Teachers at higher education institutions are also seeing significant changes in their expectations and roles, especially in an increasingly digital and connected world. These focus on having the right tools to teach effectively, having the ideal support for ongoing professional development, and having technology platforms that allow interactive and flexible teaching.

“For a couple of years, teaching has been undergoing a deep digitization process, being a solution to make learning more efficient, since a clearer understanding is achieved and greater attention is captured by students. However, we still need to see the full potential of certain tools, such as artificial intelligence, in this area,” said Nicolás Costa, Global Commercial Director of SOAINT.

Faced with this context, within the framework of Teacher’s Day, the specialist mentions three expectations of teachers where technology can help:

1. Tools to teach effectively: Teachers need tools to enable them to teach effectively in the modern learning environment, which is increasingly digital and remote. According to the report carried out by the Educational Technology Research Center (CITE), 68% of teachers in Latin America consider that the lack of adequate technological tools is a significant barrier to effective online teaching. By providing professors with the right tools, universities can improve the quality of teaching, which in turn can improve student satisfaction and retention.
2. Ongoing Professional Development: Teachers need ongoing training to keep up with the latest trends and practices in education, as well as new teaching technologies and techniques. According to a 2019 study from the University of Buenos Aires, teachers who receive ongoing training are more likely to be satisfied with their work, which can lead to higher staff retention and higher teaching quality.
3. Technology platforms for interactive and flexible teaching: Modern technology platforms allow teachers to teach in a more interactive and flexible way, which can improve the quality of teaching and student satisfaction. A 2022 study from the University of Chile notes that teachers who use interactive teaching technologies are more likely to report high satisfaction with their teaching, which may contribute to higher teacher and student retention.

“Cloud technologies, enterprise architecture, and big data and artificial intelligence solutions can provide universities with the tools they need to meet faculty expectations. These technologies can enable universities to offer effective teaching tools, continuing professional development opportunities, and flexible, interactive teaching platforms. By doing so, universities can improve teaching quality, faculty satisfaction, and student retention, which can lead to higher revenues and greater success in the 21st century knowledge economy,” Costa concludes.
