Transforming Conscription: How New Training Structures Enhance Leadership and Responsibility in the Military

After completing basic troop training as well as group leader training, they have completed the training days required for physical promotion. During the remaining time of their conscription, they can therefore act as group leaders for those who are now moving in.

– It feels good and I am proud. Of course it has been difficult, but I have never learned as much in five months as I have in this period, says Tim Agge.

From postgraduate to undergraduate degree

The associate training is either 10, 12 or 15 months, depending on the situation in which the associates are trained. In the past, those who completed 15 months of conscription were not able to join the comrades who completed the shorter training. This is due to what is called post-step, which means that those who do 15 months of military service have elements of training left after the others have completed their training. This year, the Life Guard has instead chosen to do the additional training elements included in the 15-month enlistment before the others move in, as it were before coercion was banned in 2010.

– It’s called full progression and it makes every joint of the Lifeguard move at the same time and it feels good. By now, it’s considered a little unfair to those who have to keep going through the summer after the others are kidding. I think it has hindered interest in continued participation in the Armed Forces, says administrator Mikael Jellinek, who is one of the instructors for the compositions.

Mikael Jellinek believes that overall progress will give the coordinators a better position to fulfill their duties as commanders.

Take care of yourself first

During their time at Livgardet, Tim and Simon have learned to find their way around the area and have had to do both exercises and how to make their bed. They have also attended leadership training, which was very beneficial according to Tim and Simon. They both feel that they have been taught what it means to take responsibility and how important it is to take care of yourself.

– I need to be able to take care of myself to be able to care for others. After my first week, I came home and started folding the towels, mom has never been so happy, says Tim with a smile.

Today, Tim and Sím meet the conscripts that they will both be living and training for the next nine months. Although it has been five months since Tim and Simon moved in, they have good memories of the first week.

– We know what it was like in the first days and weeks. Everything is new, stressful and hard, but you get used to it quickly. After just a few days, it becomes common place. My advice is to try to relax, everyone makes mistakes at first. It’s okay to make mistakes, says Simon.
