Transformation of the energy system? – NEW Vorarlberg daily newspaper

How do we create a safe transformation of our energy system, what about the security of supply, is the expansion of the grids taking place quickly enough against the background of the expansion of renewables? Countless questions are currently being raised about the energy supply in Austria – aggravated by the war in Ukraine, which has also focused on Austria’s enormous dependence on Russian gas for weeks.

On the “Primus Business Stage” in the Styria Media Center, a top-class group of experts – moderated by Adi Winkler – took on these complex and sometimes controversial issues. Gerhard Christiner, Technical Director of the power grid operator APG, outlined the challenges of the energy transition in Austria: Within the next eight years, Austria’s total electricity consumption must be covered 100 percent by renewable energy sources, “this corresponds to a de facto doubling of the currently installed power plant capacities in the field of renewables”. . The goals have been defined, and he identifies deficits in implementation.

In addition, there is concern about a stop in Russian gas supplies, which would have a direct impact on the security of the electricity supply. “It’s about gas-fired power plants that stabilize the power grid,” emphasizes Herbert Ritter, Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce. If there is no gas, “we’re talking about a blackout,” explains Ritter. According to Christiner, it is therefore crucial that gas-fired power plants are also included in the federal government’s strategic gas reserve.

There are also voices calling for a gas embargo from the EU – including climate activist Marlene Seidel (Fridays for Future). “An embargo has its price, but so does no embargo.” Many experts agree that an oil and gas embargo is the only way to end this war. The resulting problems should be solved by the EU together.

Lara Köck, deputy chairwoman of the Greens in the state parliament, emphasizes that security of supply is now the central task, “the gas storage tanks have to be full by winter”. Her plea: “We must understand the energy transition, which also leads to more independence, as a means of securing prosperity.”
