Transformation and Revitalization: The Changing Face of Toulon’s Montéty District

Where there once stood a workers’ town built at the end of the 19th century, the people of Toulon have seen the appearance, in recent months, of a new set of buildings. In the Montéty district, offices, commercial premises, a hotel (B&B) and a co-living and co-working residence (the Hüb) have grown. Enough to transform the place in depth.

Today, there is little more than a small renovated building to recall the history of the very first social housing in Toulon. And the statue of Notre Dame de Montéty, magnificently preserved in the building, which evokes a certain idea of the past.

The present was celebrated yesterday by the Édouard Denis group, with the grand inauguration of its “Harmony” operation. A real estate program run smoothly since its launch in 2018, in which the developer has invested a whopping nearly 45 million euros.

“A neighborhood that had become deserted”

Coming as a neighbor, Philippe Mahé, prefect of Var for three weeks, was pleased that we “build the city on the city”. The State representative particularly appreciated the new premises of the rectorate, “perfectly functional” since this summer, for which the administration did not hesitate to put its hand in its pocket (14 million euros). The mayor of Toulon Josée Massi applauded “the return of life in a neighborhood that has become deserted”.

The transformation of this block, which also saw the arrival of a brand new headquarters for the Foncia company, will not stop there. Several brands are expected, as well as the opening of the 660-space car park next to the Zénith.

Just behind the 11,800m2 of floor space which has just emerged from the ground, the health professions training institute must open its doors at the start of the 2024 school year. This project, largely financed by the Region, for the moment still punctuated by the ballet of cranes and the sound of grinders, will welcome some 1,200 students and pupils.

The Pont des Arts not expected before 2026

“The potential of this sector was noticed as early as 2001,” recalled Josée Massi, not without quoting several times the former mayor Hubert Falco who liked to tell his memories of his youth in the area. “It occupies a strategic position, close to the train station, the city center, the Zénith or Chalucet.”

So much so that the municipality is still considering erecting a “Pont des Arts” above the railway tracks, a sort of large link between two parts of the city reserved for gentle travel. However, the work, the complexity of which is regularly mentioned, will probably not see the light of day before 2026. At least.

After Chalucet and with Loubière, where elected officials went on Wednesday to see the progress of the various projects, Montéty is undeniably the district of Toulon which is undergoing the most impressive change in recent years.
