Until now, it was impossible to obtain a Crit’Air 1 sticker with a diesel. Thanks to the French company Greenolis, you can now obtain a purple air quality certificate and drive in low-emission zones without changing your car. But you will still need to update your assurance auto.
Transform your diesel into a car running on LPG
Transform a diesel into an LPG engine. The practice already exists in Italy and Spain. It is now coming to France thanks to the company Greenolis. Thanks to its Retrogaz kit, you can convert your diesel engine into an engine running on both LPG and fuel. Enough to obtain a Crit’Air 1 sticker and even a green parking disc!
The kit creates a parallel circuit and installs a tank, under the chassis or in the trunk. Once the device is in place, the vehicle runs on dual fuel : 40% gas and 60% diesel. The driver chooses his engine using a button in the passenger compartment. The Retrogaz system does not modify the original engine. If you want, you can take it apart. You will then find a 100% diesel vehicle.
Converting your diesel to gas takes two days and costs at least 2,900 euros. If there is not yet state aid as is the case for electric retrofits, installing the kit remains cheaper than purchasing a new hybrid or electric car. And this expense can be recouped thanks to the fuel savings made. In fact, a liter of diesel costs on average 1.75 euros compared to barely 1 euro for LPG.
An installation regulated by law
The Retrogaz kit is approved by the State. But there’s no question of asking it yourself.. Only a professional is authorized to install it. Currently, Greenolis has two workshops, one in Essonne, the other in Yvelines. It also relies on a network of partner garages and mobile teams to offer its services throughout France.
As with all engine changes, your car must obtain a pass from the Regional Directorate for the Environment, Planning and Housing (Dreal) before hitting the road again. After examining your vehicle, the agents issue you a new gray card. You will need to attach it to your Crit’Air 1 sticker application.
Think of send your new registration certificate to your insurance to update your contract. Your insurer will draw up a car insurance quote to take into account the change of engine. You can also insure the kit against theft. But don’t delay in notifying your insurer! In the event of an accident, it could refuse to cover you if you have not informed it of the conversion of your diesel to LPG.
