Today is Transfiguration, one of the 12 major holidays of Orthodoxy. According to folk traditions, on this day the first grapes are harvested, blessed in the church and distributed. In the liturgy of the Bulgarian Orthodox churches, the prayer song “Consecration of the Grapes” is added. From it will become the wine that symbolizes the blood of God’s son.
Transfiguration is also taken as a solar furrow between summer and autumn. With it, the Lord gives a sign that the time for autumn sowing has come. On this day, “the weather begins to change” – the sun decreases its strength, the day also decreases, the nights become colder, the waters of the rivers and springs cool and become more and more unsuitable for bathing. From now on, migratory birds will gather in flocks and take the road to warmer countries, and lizards and snakes will begin to return to their lairs underground.
It is believed that on the night before Transfiguration, as well as on Epiphany, God’s door opens in heaven. Only the righteous can see it, and whatever he wants at that moment, God will give it to him.
The feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord comes from the New Testament, which tells that Jesus Christ took his disciples Peter, James and John to Mount Tabor in Galilee to clearly show them his origin and the “new kingdom” predicted by him. There, after deep prayer, Jesus was transfigured – his face and clothes shone with a blinding light. Next to him stood the biblical prophets Moses and Elijah. A voice was heard from heaven that identified Jesus as the son of God. When they dared to open their eyes again, Christ’s disciples saw him in his ordinary human form.
