According to the document, the largest profits from the sale of its players were made by Benfica Lisbon, which generated EUR 816 million in the period under review.
The club from the Portuguese capital overtook Ajax Amsterdam and Red Bull Salzburg in the CIES ranking, which gained EUR 473 million and EUR 401 million, respectively.
The independent research institution’s ranking also includes three other Portuguese clubs. In fifth place was Sporting Lisbon with profits of 345 million euros, in seventh place was FC Porto, which earned 296 million, and in eighth place was Sporting Braga with a profit of 279 million euros.
The report shows that Manchester United and Chelsea have generated the biggest losses in the world in the last decade – €1.3 billion and €1.2 billion respectively. Third on the inglorious list is Paris Saint-Germain with a loss of €991 million.
According to the CIES report, the Portuguese top league is the leader in terms of profits from player sales. During the period under review, clubs playing in it generated a total of over €2.34 billion.
The English Championship came in second, and the Dutch Eredivisie in third. They earned €1.50 billion and €1.49 billion respectively. The Ekstraklasa came in 39th with revenues of €341 million.
The transfer balance of the best Polish league is positive and amounts to 239 million euros. As you can easily calculate, Ekstraklasa clubs have spent around 102 million euros over the last decade. This is roughly the same amount that Real Madrid spent last summer on the transfer of Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund.
