Transfer Window Updates: Werder Bremen’s Fodé Ballo-Touré and Niclas Füllkrug’s Future in Question

Freiburg (dpa / lni) – Five more days, then the transfer window in the Bundesliga will finally be closed. Until then, things will remain exciting at Werder Bremen. AC Milan left-back Fodé Ballo-Touré is still an issue. Above all, the question of whether national striker Niclas Füllkrug will continue to play on the Weser or not will be a constant concern for those responsible and fans of the Green-Whites until September 1st. The unsuccessful goalscorer in the first two matchdays is still associated with a change, and a possible transfer could trigger a chain reaction at Werder.

“I think there will still be a bit of movement with us,” said coach Ole Werner. “That means we’re still in a finding phase, and that was obvious,” said the Werder coach after the bitter 0-1 (0-0) draw at SC Freiburg on Saturday. Until well into injury time, it looked as if the self-sacrificing guests in Breisgau would be able to celebrate the first point of the new season. But then Maximilian Philipp – who was still active in the Bremen jersey as a loan last season – still caused the low blow.

“We are incredibly sad and disappointed that we didn’t take anything with us today. We definitely deserved a point,” said captain Marco Friedl. “We played a good away game.”

Christian Groß saw it that way, too, who had slipped into the starting XI somewhat surprisingly for newcomer Senne Lynen. “We tried everywhere to get a foot in between and if we didn’t manage that, then Jiri was there,” said Groß about the Werder goalkeeper Pavlenka, who kept making strong saves. “It’s bitter, but it goes on.”

Werner sees it similarly. Because despite the third competitive defeat in a row, the Bremen coach emphasized the development of his team. “It was a very good performance in terms of performance, but unfortunately not in terms of the result,” said the coach. “In the end, we were missing the one action to take something with us.”

It wasn’t the first time that the North Germans acted carelessly in the closing stages. As in the 2: 3 at third division Viktoria Köln in the DFB Cup and the 0: 4 against FC Bayern Munich, Werder conceded a goal in added time. “We have to stop that,” said Groß and Friedl confirmed: “We just can’t do it. If we play well and invest a lot, then we’ll concede a goal in the damn stoppage time.”

But it is also true that Bremen have not scored their own goals in the first two games of the season. Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch are each still waiting for their first goals. Filling krug in particular caused a stir after the cup defeat at Viktoria with his fierce criticism of the Bremen defense. The fact that he is not delivering himself and is causing unrest with his ongoing speculation about bills of exchange is explosive.
