Transfer window: PSG and OM snap up an ASSE striker

Thibault Morlain –

Journalist

After trying his hand at various sports, Thibault turned to a career as an amateur footballer. When it came to choosing between becoming a professional footballer and a journalist, the qualities tipped the scales in one direction. He is now part of the editorial staff of 10 Sport, after obtaining a degree from the International Institute of Communication in Paris.

Trained at ASSE, Bafétimbi Gomis had some great years with the Greens. A love story that ended in the summer of 2009 with a transfer to OL. A departure that could have happened a year earlier for the French international. At the time, Gomis was notably on the tablets of PSG and OM.

During the 2007-2008 season, theASSE had managed to secure European qualification by finishing in 5th place in Ligue 1. The Greens had then been notably carried by a certain Bafétimbi Gomis. Author of 16 goals in the championship, the French international could have left theASSE following this season. Gomis finally decided otherwise.

“For the love of the Greens…”

In remarks given to Carré, Bafétimbi Gomis has reconsidered his decision not to leave theASSE in the summer of 2008. At the time, the one who joined theOL a year later was very much in demand: ” To continue to earn his place in the French team, it would have been better to leave, to bring a big transfer to my club and discover the Champions League. But out of love for the Greens, for my teammates, out of fear of the unknown and the foreigner, because I only spoke the language of Molière at the time, it was difficult for me to get out of my comfort zone ».

“I had Chelsea, Manchester, Marseille, Paris”

« If I had to do it again, I would have done it differently. Was Europe at my feet? Yes. I had Chelsea, Manchester, Marseille, Paris… I had quite a few clubs. But that’s normal, when you’re young and you’re coming off a great season.…,” he continued Bafétimbi Gomiswho would have joined OM a few years later.
