Transfer Window Ends in Czech Republic: Recap and Future Expectations

The transfer window ends in the Czech Republic on September 8. Will you get stronger?

Intensive negotiations have been going on for the last two or three days, mainly with foreign countries. We approached about seven players and not a single one came for various reasons. Either the player doesn’t want to go to the Czech Republic, or the club doesn’t want to sell him because he doesn’t have a replacement. Alternatively, he is waiting for a better offer. We also tried three players in the Czech league, but the clubs did not agree either. Now one player is being dealt with, he could arrive on Monday, the negotiations are close to an agreement. He is a player on the left side. It appeared recently. When all options fell, we did a probe and two players dropped. I think one of them will make it, we took a quick look at it. The other is also from abroad. It’s fresh, negotiations are ongoing, but I think it will take longer to reach an agreement.

Who would you praise the most for their performance against Karviná?

What I liked most was that no one played badly. Some guys like Oscar or Christos Zafeiris confirmed their standard. I liked Tijani with his activity, I can see a shift in his running. Míša Tomič, on the other hand, indicated great potential both offensively and defensively. Matěj Jurásek performed a very interesting performance in the first half. Conrad Wallem played probably the best match for us. I could go on like this. Lukáš Masopust went down at halftime due to a card, it was not for performance reasons. He played well too.

Aleš Mandous got a chance in goal for the first time this season instead of Ondřej Kolář. Was it the result of Kolar’s mistakes on Thursday against Zorje Luhansk?

I must say that this change was planned in advance. Even before the last league match in Jablonec, we talked about the fact that we wanted to give Mandy space. He has quality, he trains well. But there were already so many changes at Jablonec that we kept the goalkeeper and defense the same. Even before Thursday’s match with Luhansk, we agreed with the goalkeeper coaches that we would give Mandy a chance against Karviná. The change would happen anyway. Ondra’s match on Thursday didn’t work out, it might have been even better, but it was one match. We’ll see how it goes after the international break, both goalkeepers are staying here. We’ll see what happens and how they feel. Hopefully the health condition won’t come into it.

Are you relieved that three strikers scored?

I don’t take it that way. I want us to score as many goals as possible and have as many chances as possible. Of course, it is always important for a striker to score a goal. It is true for our players now because of the situations in which they have prevailed. Venca (Jurečka) didn’t convert the penalty last time, now he did. Tijani scored the goal with a press, which is something we want from him. And he saw that it bore fruit. Mojma (Chytil) entered the match much better than in previous matches. But if our scorer has twenty-five goals or twelve at the end of the season, I don’t care at all. I’m all about team success and at the same time I want the forwards to work for the team. For example, Venc Jurečka demonstrated it again.

On the other hand, you didn’t keep a clean sheet for the third time in a row in a competitive match. Doesn’t it bother you?

Sometimes I think it’s a combination of circumstances, I think a change in the typology of the team can also show. We usually don’t start with a classic defensive midfielder, but there are more creative players in the lineup. It is also a rule lately that the opponent’s first shot ends up in our goal. Yes, there are individual hesitations, but for how little we let the opponent have chances, the number of goals conceded is a big part of it. Every mistake we make is punished. Another thing is the way of playing. We want to be active, then Lukáš Masopust will score a goal against Luhansk in the 90th minute from the stopper position. We also have eight or nine players involved in the offensive, which logically leads to situations where we are not as much security in the rest of the defense. But we want to play like that, it’s clear that some situations will arise. However, I don’t think the defensive game is a problem at all at the moment, the stoppers are the most consistent performers in the team.

What do you think of Matěj Jurásek’s latest performances?

He only turned twenty last week, a long way off for his age. He is such a non-Czech player, terribly strong with the ball in the offensive part, great in leadership, first touch and finishing. He has game intelligence, he can evaluate situations when the ball is in the air and head the ball to the players in an advantageous position, he does this very often. He has improved tremendously in terms of fitness, strength and defense. We work the most on fluctuations in performances, which are logical for such young players and have their reasons. I am sometimes demanding of him, on the other hand I have to say that even in my free time I meet him alone in the gym. He is very goal-oriented, ambitious and studious. He helped us tremendously in Jablonec and with Luhansk, where he was the main engine of change in the second half. Now in the first half it was a performance from him that I really liked. Sometimes there isn’t much to see and then he does two or three great things. I would like him to be more active in the game and on the field, so that it is not only about two or three moments of genius, but about constant activity and danger. I am very happy with it now.

The first international break is coming. How satisfied are you overall with the start of the season?

It certainly wasn’t all rosy. But except for the hesitation in Jablonec, we perform consistently. We managed to get through the qualifiers, although the first halves in the away games didn’t go the way we wanted. But pre-races are specific, little things decide. We are happy to have reached the Europa League. We are sorry that we lost two points in Jablonec. But the team trains and works very well, it has an inner life and order. Personally, I feel much better about him than last season. I think there is more. We have something to work on, something will appear again after the match in Pardubice. However, I am satisfied with how the team is set up, what the hierarchy is there, how it trains and fulfills what it has.
