At 33, the biggest challenge comes for him. Slovak winger Róbert Pich, who ended his fruitful work in Slask Wroclaw after the past season, yesterday signed a two-year contract with the 15-time Polish champion Legia Warsaw.

The culmination of a career

The possibility of the arrival of a fast-footed native from Svidník to the historically most successful club Ekstraklasy has been talked about for a long time. Yesterday, Pich successfully passed a medical examination, followed by the signing of a contract. “A lot of people were surprised that something like this was going to happen. I admit, I also did not expect such an offer to come. Everything finally fell into place and it’s a reality, “ enjoyed a former player of Banská Bystrica, Žilina and Kaiserslautern.

It was this traditional German club that played an important role in its current transfer. He was led to Kaiserslautern, where Pich from Slask even visited twice, in 2015 and 2016, and was led by the current coach of the Legion, a German with Austrian roots, Kosta Runjaič.

He took the helm a month ago, until then he had worked for several seasons in Pogoni Szczecin. He already wanted to get me there, in the end it only managed to join the Legion. When I went to Kaiserslautern, he was the first coach. Unfortunately, it ended after two months, and we haven’t met since. However, I know that even while working in Szczecin, he had me in sight. Coincidence has decided that we will meet again now. “ explained Róbert Pich.

The Warsaw Legion has already won fifteen championship titles, one more than Gornik Zabrze. It triumphed in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, but last year the recorder did not succeed at all. He even found himself in last place in the standings! He finally made it to the final tenth place.

“The previous season was really unsuccessful from the Legion’s point of view. Now, however, the goals are again only the highest. The staff is full and everyone is just thinking about keeping winning and finally controlling the whole league. Motivation is at the highest level. I will try to pass on the maximum and help the team as much as possible, “ Pich strongly emphasized and added to the age of:

“Almost everyone asks me about it. It is true that 33-year-olds no longer transfer like this. However, I am all the happier. I’m going to the biggest club in Poland. It means a great opportunity for me. I am happy about it. I even signed the contract exactly according to my ideas. I will be in the best club I have ever worked in. It’s the culmination of my career. I appreciate that something like this has come and I want to repay you for it with my performances. “

Apart from the aforementioned guest appearances in Kaiserslauterne, Róbert Pich spent almost eight years in Wrocław, Slask. During them, he played 273 competitive matches, in which he scored 60 goals. The last of this portion and at the same time one of the most important came in the penultimate round of Ekstraklasa 2021/22 on the ground of Stalu Mielec in a 1: 1 draw. Thanks to this result, Slask definitely saved himself among the elite.

“I’ve stopped counting how long I’ve actually been in Slask. But it was a beautiful time. I got used to everything, I felt at home in Wroclaw. After such a long time, a big change awaits us with my family. I admit that I didn’t plan anything like that, but I’m all the more looking forward to it now. ” concluded Róbert Pich.

Let us add that Ondrej Duda, midfielder and goalkeeper Dušan Kuciak, was the last of the Slovaks to work in the Warsaw Legion. Both left in 2016. Before that, there was also another goalkeeper Ján Mucha Jr. in this club. He later returned to the Legion as a goalkeeping coach, but ended the post after last season.
