Transcaucasian praying mantis found in Odessa park – photo

In Odessa, in Shevchenko Park, an insect, rare for our country, was noticed – the Transcaucasian tree mantis began to inhabit here.

About it informs “Dumskaya”.

Female praying mantis (Hierodula transcaucasica) was found in Odessa the other day.

This species of insects lives in Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkestan, as well as in the Caucasian region of Russia. The publication also notes that there were cases when a tree mantis was noticed in the Crimea – the first time it happened more than 100 years ago.

At the same time, a kind of praying mantis has already been noticed in Ukraine. In 2013, such a praying mantis “lit up” in the Kherson region near the Arabat Spit, and in 2015 it was seen on the Dzharylgach island.

In the Odessa region, the insect was seen for the first time.

At the same time, experts associate the expansion of the population of this type of praying mantis in Ukraine with a warming climate and the planting of forest belts in the steppe zone of the country.

Recall that a French group of paleontologists discovered fossils of a praying mantis, who lived 100 million years ago in the Cretaceous.
