Transavia Introduces New Baggage Policy Including Fees for Hand Luggage

The price for one suitcase or trolley is now included in the price of the ticket. “We want to further increase the extra income, including by paying for hand luggage,” says financial director Steven Zaat, according to De Telegraaf.

Travel association ANVR is completely “not happy” with the step that Transavia wants to take. “When you go on a trip or holiday, you naturally have luggage with you. To even have to pay for hand luggage is very sad. Transavia must focus on enforcing the existing rules for hand luggage. When you see what people bring with them, “If you can carry different sizes of bags and suitcases, you cause a lot of conflict with customers who do adhere to the rules and then cannot store their luggage,” said foreman Frank Oostdam to the newspaper.

With the new baggage policy, the effective date of which is not yet known, Transavia is following the example of budget airlines such as Wizz Air and Ryanair. This means that a handbag or small backpack is still allowed on board, but larger items of hand luggage, such as trolley suitcases, must be paid extra.
