The next edition of the Transat NEW-YORK VENDEE – Les Sables d’Olonne will leave New-York on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, for an arrival in Vendée scheduled from June 25. Second edition after the one won in 2016 by Jérémie Beyou (Maitre CoQ) in 9 days, 16 hours, 57 minutes and 49 seconds, the NEW-YORK VENDEE – Les Sables d’Olonne 2020 promises a real top match bringing together most of the skippers entered in the 9th Vendée Globe.

The presentation of the event took place Friday at the hotel of the Department of Vendée, in the presence of its partners, the Departmental Council of Vendée represented by its President Yves Auvinet, the City of Sables d’Olonne represented by its Mayor Yannick Moreau and the IMOCA Class represented by its President Antoine Mermod.

20 to 25 IMOCA skippers should be at the start of the next NEW-YORK VENDEE – Les Sables d’Olonne transatlantic race, compared to 14 during the inaugural edition in 2016. The NEW-YORK VENDEE – Les Sables d’Olonne transatlantic race is registered now every four years as the last event of the IMOCA GLOBE SERIES before the Vendée Globe which will start a few months later. “Crossing the North Atlantic in June generally offers ideal conditions” explains Antoine Mermod, President of the IMOCA Class: ” This transatlantic race will be the last Globe Series race before the Vendée Globe and will therefore constitute a real “warm-up” before the solo round-the-world race. Right after taking part in The Transat, the competitors will therefore have a fairly high level of preparation, which promises competition at the highest level. Many transatlantic boats leave from France but the NEW-YORK VENDEE – Les Sables d’Olonne is the only one that arrives in France, in the Vendée, which makes it one of its original features. The arrival in the famous Sables Channel will once again be a very emotional moment … With this race, Vendée shows once again that it is the event department par excellence, and Sables d’Olonne, the point of start of the biggest sailing races. It is a very important partner for the IMOCA class and this race consolidates our strong relationship.

For the President of the Vendée, Yves Auvinet: ” The possibility of organizing a major event is an important asset for a tourist department like the Vendée. This second edition of the NEW-YORK VENDEE – Les Sables d’Olonne transatlantic race will provide additional entertainment at the start of the summer season. The Vendée Departmental Council, the main partner of the event, will invest both in the entertainment and in the promotion of the event to make this race a major nautical event, but also a great popular festival. We will be waiting for the first competitors from June 25 and the awards ceremony will take place on June 28. The Vendée shows that it is undoubtedly the department of the sea and thus consolidates its image as a leader in sailing“.

For the Mayor of Sables d’Olonne, Yannick Moreau: “ It is an international event which will launch the tourist season. It is a help for the tourist economy and for the influence of the City of Sables d’Olonne. We will do everything to ensure that the public is present in the channel to welcome the skippers. »
