Trane Technologies’ Thermo King® announces refrigerated trailer system with zero direct carbon emissions

Innovative refrigerated trailer system combines a fully electric refrigeration unit and highly efficient battery storage to transport food and medication reliably and sustainably

Thermo King®, the refrigerated transport brand of the global climate innovator Trane Technologies (NYSE: TT), today on the international trade fair Solutrans presented its trailer cooling system without direct CO2 emissions in Lyon, France.

The Thermo King® AxlePower technology combines a fully electric cooling unit, a highly efficient battery storage and the possibility of working with low-emission or emission-free energy sources such as an axle energy recovery system, shore power or hybrid system. The sustainable battery enables the cooling unit to work autonomously and to keep the charge at an optimal temperature even when the vehicle is not moving.

“The safe and sustainable transportation of food, medicines and vaccines is more important than ever,” said Francesco Incalza, President of Thermo King Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Temperature-controlled transport is subject to the highest requirements in terms of operational safety. Our technology can ensure that sensitive goods maintain the required temperature while reducing energy, emissions and noise – all important for a sustainable future. We pride ourselves on continuing to deliver breakthrough technologies that support our customers ‘sustainability goals and our Gigaton Challenge to reduce our customers’ carbon emissions by one gigaton by 2030. “

The new solution offers immediate and long-term sustainability benefits while reducing operating costs. With zero direct emissions and quiet operation, it enables inner-city deliveries, even in ultra-low-emission zones (ULEZs). Intelligent energy management ensures that enough battery reserves are always available, even on long journeys or in traffic jams. If necessary, the system can also generate energy from the pulling force of the trailer. All components are monitored in real time by a Thermo King telematics system.

Thermo King will be on the international trade fair Solutrans present the zero-direct-emission trailer cooling unit AxlePower with the ePower system from BPW from November 16 to 20. This integrated system is currently in the test phase and recovers the energy generated when the vehicle rolls, coasts or brakes and stores it in Thermo King’s efficient battery to power the cooling system. This system is tractor independent and compatible with all Thermo King trailer coolers. The solution was nominated from over 100 applications as one of seven finalists for the Solutrans Innovation Award.

The fully electric E200 unit from Thermo King for small vans and trucks as well as the new Advancer Hybrid-Cooling unit presents the latest addition to the Advancer A-Serie-A row of trailers that seamlessly switches between the primary electric operating mode and engine power when needed.

“At Trane Technologies, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do as we challenge what is feasible for the industry and the world,” said Incalza. “Thermo King has led the industry in electrification of transport refrigeration for decades, and we continue to innovate tirelessly to serve our customers, our communities and our planet.”

Thermo King has Committedto invest more than $ 100 million over the next three years to deliver an all-electric product in every segment of the cold chain by 2023 in EMEA and 2025 in America.

With his Sustainability commitments 2030 Trane Technologies helps solve some of the world’s greatest sustainability challenges. These commitments include a commitment to reduce customers’ greenhouse gas emissions by one gigaton (2% of global annual emissions) and to achieve climate-neutral operation. Its Opportunity for All pledge commits to achieving gender equality in leadership, a diversity of workforce that reflects its communities, and community initiatives that promote equitable education and pathways to green and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers support.
