The great shortcomings and abandonment of the railway is highlighted by yet another complaint from the Panhellenic Association of Traction Personnel as it publishes a revealing video of the non-existent safety conditions at the unguarded train crossings, just one year after the Tempe tragedy and the government’s claims that… everything is fine well.
In particular, the passage of vehicles through many unguarded points and crossings in the middle of fields is done literally at the risk of the lives of drivers, pedestrians, but also those on board the trains.
In the video, which was taken in the area of Doirani last Friday, March 8, a guard on board a train can be seen getting down to let the train pass, while seconds before a large truck had crossed the tracks at the unguarded point.
As the Panhellenic Union of Traction Personnel (PEPE) complains, only in Thrace 25 railway crossings remain non-functioning and unguarded, while on the line to Serres the OSE places guards at the railway crossings only when trains carrying goods pass through, leaving passenger trains exposed and forcing Hellenic Train to place guards on board. “The train stops before the crossing, the guard gets off it, secures it, the train passes and waits for the guard to get back on it.”
The train drivers present in detail all the danger points in the railway network and request an immediate meeting with the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras.
