With an ICE train leaving Cologne for Frankfurt at 4:20 a.m., traffic on the important high-speed line has started up again. For almost four weeks, travelers and commuters had to cope with diversions and correspondingly longer travel times due to construction work.
Deutsche Bahn completed the work as planned“Train traffic has been running again since early this morning,” said a railway spokesman on Tuesday.
Failures due to switch failure
However, due to the repair of a switch on the route between Frankfurt Airport and Cologne Central Station, there will be delays and cancellations in long-distance, regional and S-Bahn services on Tuesday.
The affected switch is not part of the renovated route, the railway told hr. They hope to be able to fix the problem by the end of the day.
Renovation for 50 million euros
Since July 16, 70 kilometers of tracks and 13 switches have been renewed along the route at a cost of around 50 million euros. The stops in Siegburg/Bonn, Montabaur and Limburg South were closed during this time. Travelers and commuters had to accept delays of up to 90 minutes. In some cases, the railway also used replacement buses.
Germany’s next main traffic artery will be closed
From Friday, passengers will have to deal with another major construction site: Berlin-Hamburg, one of the busiest routes nationwide, will be closed until mid-December. There will be significant restrictions on long-distance and regional traffic.
