In the period from October 2023 to the end of September 2024, a total of 839 young people registered as applicants for a training position. That was almost as many as in the same period last year.
Almost 160 positions are vacant
On the other hand, 1,400 training positions were offered to be filled by companies in the region. 109 jobs fewer than the year before. Of these registered apprenticeships, 158 are currently unfilled.

Most of them (22) are in retail. This is followed by chef, hotel manager and restaurant specialist, each with twelve positions. Salesman (9), plant mechanic (8), sports and fitness clerk (5), office clerk (5), agricultural and construction machinery mechatronics engineer (4) and warehouse clerk (4). There are still 65 apprenticeship positions open in various other professions.

Companies shouldn’t go by school grades
The surplus of jobs is a comfortable situation for young people, but difficult for companies. “They are increasingly having problems filling their vacancies. If the desired applicant is not there, a position will be canceled completely. “But that can’t be a solution,” says Dirk Hausweiler, who is responsible for operational business at the agency. “The applicant situation doesn’t get any better!”

His solution: Companies should focus on young people who do not meet the requirements straight away. “The school grades and qualifications with which the young people apply do not paint a complete picture.” Practical talent is often not evident from this.
