National Women’s Heart Health Awareness Initiative and Educational Toolkit

In 2017, the Canadian Women’s Heart Health Center (CCWHC) released the results of a national survey that highlighted the need for greater awareness and training among Canadian clinicians on the incidence, prevalence, importance and management of heart disease in women. The CCSCF has therefore created nine educational modules intended for trainees as well as health professionals in cardiology, general internal medicine and emergency medicine. The modules lend themselves well to individual learning, but teachers can also use the tools provided (PowerPoint document, accompanying notes and resource list) in their respective institutions. All modules are approved and available free of charge.

Integration of notions of women’s heart health into university training programs

Medical school and clinical training curricula rarely address the sex and gender specificities of cardiovascular disease, an omission that may contribute to persistent inequities in women’s care and clinical outcomes. To remedy this, the training and education group is approaching universities across Canada to integrate its nine accredited training modules into programs in medicine, nursing and other health disciplines.
