Olympique Marseille’s trainer, André Villas-Boas, has raised the idea of freezing shirt number 10. That said the 43-year-old Portuguese following the death of Diego Maradona, who played with number 10 on his back.
“I would like FIFA not to forgive number 10 anymore, in any country and in any team,” Villas-Boas said after the 2-0 loss in the Champions League against FC Porto. “That would be the best tribute for him. His passing is an unbelievable loss for the football world.”
The Italian club Napoli, where Maradona played from 1984 to 1991, has not used jersey number 10 since 2000 out of respect for the football legend. However, FIFA has already indicated that the Argentine national team will not be allowed to assign the back number of the former star player to no player.
On Wednesday evening, the mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris, already announced that he would like to name the stadium of Napoli after Maradona. He granted the South American honorary citizenship of his city in 2017. “Now let’s dedicate the Stadio San Paolo to Diego Armando Maradona. He is the greatest footballer of all time.” (ANP)
